Bali woven fabric, has long been famous as a
souvenir for any tourist who visit and want to have a distinctive keepsake
Island of Thousand Temples. When in fact woven
fabric is a cultural identity, which should be passed on from generation to
generation in order to continue to exist.
One village was known as a producer of traditional
weaving is the village of Sidemen, Karangasem, Bali. Weaving has become a daily activity of the population,
especially women. On the sidelines of the care
of the household, the women would weave, a skill which they inherited from
their ancestors.
Sidemen woven fabric consists of several kinds.
However, the most popular fabric woven ikat and
songket. Ikat fabric, which is usually referred
to endek, commonly used in everyday life. As
with the weaving songket cloth, which is used for special events. Such as, weddings, otonan, cutting teeth, cremation or other
traditional ceremonies.
The process of producing ikat or songket have
differences. To weave ikat fabric type or endek,
starting with spinning. Where the thread will be
stretched on an instrument skelter. Strand after
strand of yarn will be tied with rope, customized with decorative motifs and
colors desired.
After binding the desired motifs, further colored
yarn to be dyed. Threads that have been
submerged colors will be sorted, only then the thread will be woven to produce
fabric.
Being the songket fabric, the fabric is woven first
inserted with benag gold, copper or silver on top of the warp which it is
based. Additional threads will form its own
style, and produce beautiful fabrics, elegant and appealing to the wearer.
Another type of weaving that is no less well known
is typical of double ikat Tenganan. Among the
people of Tenganan, woven fabric used when the customary activities that are
sacred. Especially when usaba Sambah ceremony on
the fifth sasih.
Tenganan typical woven fabric using three colors,
namely yellow, black and red are derived from natural ingredients. Yellow color obtained from a mixture of hazelnut oil in water
mixed with ash. Regular hazelnut forest obtained
from Tenganan. The next thread will be woven
fabric used, first soaked in a mixture of ash and walnut oil, for about seven
days a month.
Gerinsing fabric color has its own meaning. Yellow color as a representation of the air, water and black
is the symbol of the red as a symbol of fire or energy that is in the universe.

The black color is obtained when the yarn soaked in
sediment whiting, sticky tape, wood and banana leaves, marinated tilapia for a

The red color of the yarn comes from immersion in a
mixture of bark and root bark of Morinda citrifolia kepundung. Thread which indirectly soaked red, but yellow first, until
long into the red.

current incarnation of the rice water ditanak or cooked. The goal that the color of the thread to be durable, do not
fade, will not be easy to break, and ready to be woven into a charming form of
woven fabric.
